Teen views

A recent study by an online marketing firm suggests that teenagers follow tradition.

Research Now and K&A BrandResearch surveyed 12 to 17 year olds in the United States, United Kingdom, Poland and Germany to learn how they feel about the holiday and its traditions.

Nine out 10 teenagers said that Christmas was not Christmas without a tree. In the United Kingdom and Great Britain, nearly eight out of 10 teens said they always have an Advent calendar, and more than 80 percent of teens in the United States and Great Britain said the decorations “are a must.”

The survey found that teenagers believe there is more to Christmas than receiving presents. However, teen attitudes about the nature of the holiday don’t extend to the religious nature of the feast.

According to the survey, a third of American teens said “Christmas has nothing to do with beliefs for a long time.” The percentages were higher among German and Polish teens.

When it comes to gift-giving, parents might want to heed the findings by checking their teen’s wish list. More than half of Americans and about a third of British and Polish teens said they would rather not be surprised but instead would prefer to receive gifts on their wish list.

Teens would rather have the cash, but they also enjoy giving as well as receiving gifts.

“Teenagers are less cynical and more ‘innocent’ about Christmas and its traditions than might be expected,” the study concluded.
