New Year’s Eve Ball drop planned in Rensselaer Falls

RENSSELAER FALLS — A village couple is gearing up to host the second annual “First Night at the Falls” on New Year’s Eve.

Tammy L. Cotton and Donald D. Sendlak will host “First Night” at the former Methodist Church, 107 State St.

The public is invited to begin gathering around the old church at 11 p.m. There will be hot cocoa and doughnuts for sale.

The first event was attended by more than 100 people last year. The ball drop was such a success, the couple decided to make it an annual event.

“We anticipate a pretty big crowd this year,” Ms. Cotton said. “This is the only ball drop we know of in St. Lawrence County.”

This year’s New Year’s Eve ball, made by Ms. Cotton and Mr. Sendlak, is 4 feet in diameter and features 360 LED lights and a mirror ball inside. It will drop from a boom extending from the bell in the steeple of the church.

The winner of the night’s 50/50 raffle will get to ring the bell at midnight and will receive a souvenir T-shirt.

“We love this community, and are proud to be able to help bring people together in a fun family atmosphere,” Ms. Cotton said. “We feel as members of the community, it is our responsibility and joy to help bring things to the community. Everybody has been so good to us. The least we can do is have fun and bring the people together.”

The couple plans to open “Sanctuary,” an art gallery featuring commissioned art and performing artworks, next summer in the old church. The gallery will include a lounge serving adult beverages, light foods and coffee. Eventually it will also serve as a banquet facility and restaurant.
