Dec. 28, 2002: A new user-friendly archiving program made its debut last week for customers seeking information on court and land records stored in the county clerk’s office.The Windows-based program named Resolution can be accessed through new 21-inch monitors in the clerk’s office linked to a new central server in the basement of the County Office Building. The old system - and the 13-inch monitors used to access it - will remain next to the new computers while the company installing Resolution, Cott Systems, fixes problems with the system.

Dec. 28, 1987:In response to AIDS-related misconceptions resulting from fear and too much talk, a recently formed AIDS Advisory Committee for the East St. Lawrence County Chapter of the American Red Cross has begun work on a vaccine for the disease-like rumors which it says are spreading faster than the HIV virus itself.

Dec. 28, 1962:St. Lawrence Seaway traffic set new records for the period ending Nov. 30 with a rise of 9 percent on the Montreal-Lake Ontario portion and an increase of more than 12 percent on the Welland Canal. November tonnage this year exceeded that for the same month in 1961.

75 years ago

Dec. 28, 1937:With bags of oranges, tangerines and grapefruit slung over their shoulders, members of the Watertown High School football team returned from Coachman’s packing house, Clearwater, Fla., where they had been taken on a tour of inspection. The boys were given the opportunity to go into the large citrus groves and pick their own fruit, filling as many as two and three bags each.

100 years ago

Dec. 28, 1912:The new steel power line of the Northern Power Co., extending from Higly Falls to Pyrites via Hannawa is complete, and the electric current will be turned on within the next three weeks, thus completing the first step of a power line which the projectors hope to extend to Watertown.

125 years ago

Dec. 28, 1887:The employees of the wood department of the Watertown Spring Wagon Co. presented A.D. Wallace, their foreman, with a gold headed cane, as a Christmas present, yesterday.

150 years ago

Dec. 28, 1862:The line between Watertown and Syracuse was “out of kilter” again this morning, as it usually is in bad weather. The state of things will have to be endured until the first of February, when the new line between Watertown and Rome will be brought into use, and the present one-horse arrangement will be disposed with, it is to be hoped.
