Fifth person charged in theft of guns, OxyContin in Gouverneur

GOUVERNEUR — A fifth person has been charged and additional details have emerged in connection with the alleged theft of a safe, guns and narcotic painkillers from a town residence earlier this month.

Robert B. Norton, 17, Gouverneur, was arrested by state police on Thursday evening and accused of fifth-degree criminal possession of stolen property and seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, both class A misdemeanors.

His arrest comes one day after four other people were charged following investigation into the Dec. 21 burglary of a safe from a home at 1383 County Route 12.

According to troopers, the theft netted two handguns, $800 in cash and more than 90 OxyContin tablets. The opioid drug is frequently prescribed to treat severe or chronic pain.

Mr. Norton was issued an appearance ticket.

The other suspects identified in the case, all of Gouverneur and all of whom were arrested on Wednesday afternoon, are:

nJeannette M. Lashbrooks, 44, was charged with fourth-degree criminal possession of a firearm, a class E felony, and fifth-degree criminal sale of a controlled substance, a class D felony. Ms. Lashbrooks was arraigned in Gouverneur Town Court and committed to the St. Lawrence County jail, Canton, in lieu of $5,000 cash bail.

n Anthony M. Montoya, 21, was charged with fourth-degree criminal possession of a firearm and making a false written statement, a class A misdemeanor. Mr. Montoya was arraigned in Gouverneur Town Court and committed to the jail in lieu of $10,000 cash bail.

n Jayda L. Jones, 16, was charged with fourth-degree criminal possession of a firearm and issued an appearance ticket.

n A 15-year-old girl was charged with fourth-degree criminal possession of a firearm and making a false written statement and was issued an appearance ticket.
