POTSDAM A Winthrop man was killed Monday afternoon when an SUV crossed the center line of Route 11 and crashed head-on into his van, state police at Canton said.
Lawrence E. Wagstaff Jr., 66, of 967 County Route 49, was pronounced dead at the scene of the 1:13 p.m. crash by St. Lawrence County Coroner June H. Wood, troopers confirmed Monday night.
The other driver, Anna Manning, 63, of Parishville, was transported to Canton-Potsdam Hospital suffering from abdominal pains, troopers said. Ms. Mannings injuries were not believed to be life-threatening.
State police said Ms. Manning apparently became distracted and lost control of the 2008 Chevrolet blazer she was driving. The SUV then crossed into the opposite lane of Route 11 near Regan Road, colliding with the 1994 Ford Econoline van driven by Mr. Wagstaff.
Alcohol is not suspected as a factor in the crash, troopers said.
An autopsy on Mr. Wagstaffs body was scheduled for 3:30 p.m. New Years Day at Canton-Potsdam Hospital, Ms. Wood said.
Ms. Manning was ticketed with failure to keep right, troopers said. She is scheduled to answer the charge Jan. 10 in Potsdam Town Court.
