Roland C. Demers


DEFERIET—-Roland C. Demers, 91, died on December 30, 2012 at the Country Manor Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Carthage, where he has been a resident since November; formerly of Maiden Lane, Great Bend.

He was born on May 31, 1921, in Montreal Quebec, Canada; the son of David and Agnes LaLonde Demers, he moved to the Newton Falls area as a child where he attended Newton Falls Schools. He served in the United States Navy from June 17, 1940 to August 1948. He then joined the Naval Reserves in Watertown which he retired from the military in 1977.

He married Josephine Turpin on January 19, 1946 at the St. Rita of Cascia Catholic Church, Deferiet, with the Rev. Alex Clairmont officiating.

He was employed by the St. Regis Paper Co, for 35 years, he retired in 1983.

He was a member of St. Rita of Cascia Catholic Church, Deferiet Senior Citizens. He was also a member of The Felts Mills American Legion Post #1502, Fleet Reserve Assn. of The United States Navy.

He is survived by his two sons, Roland, Baldwinsville, Dennis and his wife Peggy, Liverpool, two daughters and their husbands, Joanne and Michael Coleman, Port Orange Fl, Christine and Paul Sherbino, Red Wood NY, one brother, Leon Demers, Tonawanda; Also surviving are 5 grandchildren, 1 step-granddaughter, 11-great-grandchildren, and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He is predeceased by his wife Josephine who died in 2008 and a sister Jane Saber.

Calling hours will be held on Thursday, January 3, 2013 from 5pm-8pm at the Scherer Funeral Home., 500 State Street. A Funeral Mass will be held on Friday, January 4, 2013 at 10:00am at the St. Rita of Cascia Catholic Church, Deferiet. Burial will follow in the Black River Cemetery.

Arrangements are being handled by the Scherer Funeral Home, Inc., 500 State St., Carthage.
