Ogdensburg retailers report a successful holiday season

The 2012 holiday shopping season was the most profitable compared to recent years for city business owners.

“We were amazed at how well we did,” said Rick J. Griffith, one of the three owners of Cobblestone Gifts, 1409 Frod St.

Mr. Griffith said the store, which sells country décor and Adirondack-style and Amish furniture and antiques, has seen its best year in sales since it opened. He attributes much of the store’s success to its move from 809 Ford St. to 1409 Ford St. in November and the improving economy.

“Our sales are definitely up from last year, and quite a bit,” he said. “The shop is looking kind of bare, and we’re looking to get some more pieces soon.”

The store mailed fliers to former customers informing them of their new location, but Mr. Griffith said the store did “nothing different than last year,” nor did it offer any special sales or promotions.

“People seem to like our new location a lot,” he said. “It is a lot and brighter and a lot more roomy. The most popular item seems to be our Amish furniture, which you can’t get many places, We have better way of displaying it in here.” he said. “We sold lot of everything — furniture, candles and signs, prints and other home décor.”

This year marked the second year in business for “Nothing New, Just Unique,” 1011 Linden St. Owner Cris E. Rishe said she also saw a major jump in sales in just one year.

“We had a lot of new faces,” said Ms. Rishe. “We had a lot more traffic this year, too. People were in and out all season.”

She said the biggest difference from last year was the influx of Canadian visitors. Ms. Rishe estimates that 60 percent of her regular customers are Canadian.

“Because we sell a lot of antiques, we don’t do very many promotions or sales,” said Ms. Rishe. “But we do get a lot of regulars who spread the word.”

Canadian customers also seem to be the driving force for Carbino’s Jewelry Store, 304 Ford St., according to owner Gregory M. Carbino.

“It would be difficult to calculate how many Canadian customers we have,” Mr. Carbino said. “But we do get a lot of them.”

The store didn’t do any major promotions or sales this year, and Mr. Carbino credits the store’s success to the demand for popular items not offered in most places, including diamonds and Pandora bracelets.

“We are the exclusive Pandora jewelry seller in St. Lawrence and Franklin Counties,” said Mr. Carbino. “Pandora is getting bigger and bigger all the time, so that that’s a big part of it. “Overall, this season has been excellent.”
