Use more common sense when dealing with guns

We have another mass killing of young schoolchildren and their teachers along with the requisite calls for more strict gun control laws. Let’s examine what we know and determine what safeguards might have prevented this tragic event.

Most were killed with the assault rifle, and a ban on the sale of assault weapons might have prevented that. However, if the weapons had been kept in a gun safe, that also could have prevented the son from using them. An armed security guard in the school might have prevented this.

If we are to place responsibility for these events, we must question why the mother would keep these weapons and ammunition within easy reach of someone diagnosed with mental problems. Not only were the weapons within easy reach, the son was instructed in their use.

Common sense in restricting access to the weapons would have had more of an impact in preventing this tragedy than a weapons ban or further restricting legitimate gun ownership. The application for acquiring and carrying firearms does not measure common sense and tighter controls would not have prevented the son from using his mother’s weapons.

A total ban on all weapons would leave them in the hands of criminals and police. The police can’t be everywhere and are usually not around when the event is taking place.
