LISBON — Lights on the River has proved its success over the past several years isn’t a fluke.

In its third year, Lights on the River earned $16,200 for local food pantries.

“There are a lot of generous people out in the community,” Scott A. Wilhelm, president of the organization, said.

Last month’s holiday lighting event saw 75 displays set up along the St. Lawrence River at Lisbon Beach and Campground.

This is also the second year the display’s proceeds leaped upward by a large number. The 2011 proceeds were $11,700, which was substantially more than double the $4,700 raised in 2010.

With both the space and the electricity for the event donated by the town, Lights on the River was able to give all of its proceeds to selected food pantries.

The event was free and open to the public, but donations of canned goods or money were accepted at the gate.

This year Lights on the River benefited the Lisbon Food Pantry, Ogdensburg Neighborhood Center, Ogdensburg Salvation Army, Canton Neighborhood Center, Canton Church & Family Program, Heuvelton Food Pantry, Waddington Family Resource Center and Hammond Food Pantry.

The Lisbon & Madill Backpack Programs were also supported through donations this year.

“It’s becoming a real must-see event,” Mr. Wilhelm said.

Lights on the River features Christmas light displays set up by families, community groups and businesses.

“It’s just awesome; the amount of people who continue to want to be involved,” Mr. Wilhelm said.

“Our goal next year is to increase the number [of displays],” Mr. Wilhelm said.

Beginning in 2010, Lights on the River had 25 displays.

Roughly 15,000 people drove through Lisbon Beach and Campground to see the displays this year.
