CANTON — Four Erie County men have been indicted by a St. Lawrence County grand jury in connection with an alleged drug ring operating in the Ogdensburg area.

The quartet, who were arrested last month, are among six people facing charges in three different cases according to indictments handed up Wednesday in County Court.

The drug suspects, all of Buffalo, are Charles J.H. Caviness, 24; Eldridge Gossom, 25; Andre L. Wilson, 40; and Tige K. Smith Jr., 24.

All have been charged with third-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, a Class B felony.

The defendants were arrested Dec. 6 following a raid by Ogdensburg police on an apartment at 325 Belmont Courts.

Ogdensburg police said in December that the arrests resulted from an ongoing investigation into crack cocaine trafficking in the city. The men were part of a distribution ring predominantly made up of suspects from Buffalo, police said, but which also included some local participants. On Wednesday, police said no further arrests have been made in the case, but refused to say whether any more might be pending. Police also refused to say how much cash and crack were seized in the Dec. 6 raid.

Following arraignment in Ogdensburg City Court, the men were committed to the St. Lawrence County jail, Canton, where they remained in custody Wednesday. Mr. Caviness, Mr. Wilson and Mr. Smith had bail set at $10,000 cash or $20,000 bond, while Mr. Gossom was held on $20,000 cash or $40,000 bond.

In unrelated indictments handed up Wednesday:

Angelina Hughes, 25, of 51 N. Main St., Massena, faces one count of fourth-degree grand larceny, a Class E felony, and one count of petit larceny, a Class E misdemeanor.

According to court documents, Ms. Hughes is accused of stealing a woman’s debit or credit card in the village of Canton on Aug. 10.

Ryan L. Brothers, 27, of 55B McGinnis Road, Norwood, faces two Class E felony counts of driving while intoxicated.

St. Lawrence County Sheriff’s deputies said Mr. Brothers was involved in a one-car crash on Sept. 15 in which he struck a road sign on Old Market Road in the town of Stockholm.

His blood alcohol content was listed as 0.12 percent, deputies said. A BAC of 0.08 percent or more is considered proof of intoxication under state law.

Assistant District Attorney Amanda N. Nissen said Mr. Brothers was previously convicted of DWI in 2004 in Norfolk Town Court.
