U.S. Rep. William L. Owens, D-Plattsburgh, has been appointed to the House Appropriations Committee, his office announced Friday.

The committee is responsible for overseeing federal spending in every department. His appointment required that Mr. Owens step down from his positions in the Agriculture, Armed Services and Small Business committees.

“I look forward to giving the north country a voice in the committee’s important work,” Mr. Owens said in an emailed statement. “This provides an opportunity to support investment in federal programs that help businesses and families in the 21st District while advocating for important economic drivers like Fort Drum.”
