Sophia S. Walters


McConnellsville- Sophia S. Walters 88, formerly of McConnellsville Rd., passed away January 3, 2013 at the Presbyterian Home. She was born Nov 13, 1924 in New York Mills, NY a daughter of Joseph & Kathryn Rogowski Swiatowska. On Dec 1, 1945 she married Theodore K. Walters in Transfiguration Church, Rome, NY. Mr. Walters passed away Dec 29, 1994. Sophia, together with her husband, owned and operated Walters Chevrolet-Oldsmobile, Inc. for many years, where she served as the Corporation Secretary-Treasurer, retiring in 1985. She previously worked at Rhoads Hospital and Rome Air Depot. She was a member of St. John’s Church and its Catholic Women’s Club, the Camden Business Professional Women’s Club, the McConnellsville Golf Club, and for many years, Sophia enjoyed working the Camden area Blood Mobiles.

Surviving are a daughter Kathy & Jack Radley, Sherrill, NY, four sons, Andrew & Linda Walters, Camden, David & DeDe Walters, Painted Post, Frank & Crystal Walters, McConnellsville, and John Walters, Ithaca, NY, 12 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren and several nieces & nephews. She was predeceased by a sister Jesse at age 3, her sister Laura Zarnoch, on July 5, 2012 and a great grandson, James Radley Mattioli, on 12/14/12, at the Sandy Hook Elementary School.

The family would like to express their gratitude to the Presbyterian Home for the care and compassion shown to Sophia, especially to the Elm Unit, and all of the caregivers who were there insuring her comfort during her time spent at the home.

A private Mass of Christian Burial will be held from St. John’s Church, Camden, NY under the direction of the LaRobardiere Funeral Home, Inc., Camden, NY. As were Sophia’s wishes, there will be no public calling hours. Spring interment will be in the St. John’s Cemetery.
