Mary E. Abbey, 82, of 8140 Fargo Road, Henderson, passed away Friday, January 4, 2013, at Mercy Hospital South Buffalo after a short illness.
Born on November 30, 1930, in Utica, she was a daughter of the late Stuart C. and Mildred Divine Lane. On December 27, 1952, at St. Josephs Catholic Church in Oriskany Falls, she married Edwin J. Abbey who predeceased her in 2006.
Mrs. Abbey was a dedicated nursing professional. She graduated from the St. Elizabeth School of Nursing. She began her registered nursing career at Colgate Universitys Infirmary in Hamilton. In 1966 she continued her nursing career in pediatrics and geriatrics at the Good Samaritan Hospital in Watertown. In 1974, she was promoted to Director of In-Service Education and Training. In 1975, she continued her nursing career in Cincinnati, OH, at the Reading Nursing Home. In 1976, she moved to Lewiston, and finished her nursing career working for the Presbyterian Nursing Home in Buffalo, retiring in 1981.
From 1996-2002 Mary and her husband lived in Fort Wayne, Indiana but moved back to New York in 2002 and resided in Henderson.
She was a member of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution. Mary was an avid gardener. She enjoyed counted cross stitch, crocheting, knitting, needle work and baking. Mary was a very talented and creative lady that always remained active and was interested in all of her childrens and grandchildrens interests and hobbies.
Surviving are her sister, Virgina Miller, of Maryland and three children:Virginia (George) Nuffer of Portville; Patricia Slocum of Fort Wayne, IN and John (Judy) Abbey of Bayonne, NJ; 9 grandchildren; and 8 great-grandchildren.
At Mrs. Abbeys request there will be no visitation or funeral services. Memorials in honor of Mrs. Abbey may be made to the American Diabetes Association or to a charity of the donors choice.
