SLU’s MacDonald Named Goalie of the Week

CANTON - St. Lawrence University sophomore goalie Carmen MacDonald has been named ECAC Hockey’s Goaltender of the Week for her play against nationally-ranked No. 9 Northeastern and No. 5 Boston College.

MacDonald posted her first shutout of the season against the Huskies in an impressive 6-0 win at Appleton Arena. The Pictou, NS native added a season-high 36 saves, including 12 in the third period, against Boston College the following day.

“Carmen really saw the puck well throughout the two games and battled for rebounds that both Northeastern and Boston College had,” said St. Lawrence head coach Chris Wells. “Last weekend was a solid start for both her and our team.”

Joining MacDonald in the league’s weekly honors were Harvard’s Jillian Dempsey and Dartmouth’s Ailish Forfar. Dempsey extended her career-long point streak to 27 games with a five-point outing at Union and an assist against Rensselaer to earn Player of the Week. Forfar was tabbed the conference’s Rookie of the Week after a three-goal weekend, the first tallies of her collegiate career for the Big Green.

St. Lawrence will play its first ECAC Hockey games of 2013 this weekend when they travel to Yale and Brown on Friday and Saturday, January 11 and 12. The Saints currently stand in fifth place in the league with a 6-2-0 record.

@zAgateSubhead:Potsdam Hockey Duo Earns ECAC Honors

POTSDAM - SUNY Potsdam women’s hockey players Kristen Domanski (Brooklin, Ontario) and Alexandra Holowka (Winnipeg, Manitoba) have been recognized by the Eastern College Athletic Conference West for their play during the week ending January 6.

Domanski was named the conference’s Rookie of the Week and Holowka earned a spot on the league’s Honor Roll.

Domanski scored her first two collegiate goals to help the Bears win the

2013 DoubleTree Ice Hockey Classic in South Burlington last weekend. The freshman defenseman scored Potsdam’s first goal of the tourney with a marker just 3:34 into the Bears’ 6-4 opening win over Nichols College. She then scored the second of her career in the third period of Potsdam’s 4-1 victory over host Saint Michael’s on Saturday. Domanski has played in all 14 games of the Bears’ contests this season and has two goals and two assists for four points.

Holowka had a four-point weekend for the Bears as they swept the Bison and Purple Knights in Vermont. Against Nichols, the forward recorded three assists to help Potsdam to the win. The following afternoon, the sophomore notched the game-winning goal in the second period of the Bears’ victory over Saint Michael’s. Holowka has played in all of Potsdam games in

2012-13 and has three goals and four assists for seven points.

@zAgateSubhead:Pierce Named Player of the Week

POTSDAM - SUNY Potsdam men’s basketball player Curtis Pierce (Brooklyn, N.Y.) has been named the State University of New York Athletic Conference Player of the Week for the week ending Jan. 6.

Curtis Pierce led the Bears to a 1-1 record during a tough non-conference slate. The senior posted a career-high 30 points in an exciting 86-80 comeback win over Manhattanville College. Pierce nearly missed a double-double performance and hit several key shots in the contest. The Brooklyn native then scored 23 points to put his team in contention with the No. 10 ranked Ramapo Roadrunners. He averaged 26.5 points and eight rebounds per game on the weekend.

This year, Potsdam’s captain leads his team in scoring with 17.5 ppg, steals (24), and is second in rebounds (5.7). Pierce is currently in sole procession of 15th place on the Bears’ all-time scoring list with 1190 points. He is only 83 points shy of cracking the top 10 in career scoring.

Also, the senior has amassed 608 rebounds for his career, which puts him

25 boards away from becoming one of the 10 best Potsdam rebounders.

The Bears (4-6, 1-3 SUNYAC) hit the road as they resume SUNYAC play with Brockport and Geneseo this weekend. Potsdam takes on the Golden Eagles at

8 p.m. on Friday and the Knights at the 4 p.m. on Saturday.

@zAgateSubhead:Clarkson’s Loggins Rookie of the Week

POTSDAM - Since the last awards were given in late-December, freshman Ashley Loggins (Albany, NY) of the Clarkson University women’s basketball team has averaged better than 20 points per game, and her performance over that span was rewarded as she was selected the Liberty League Rookie of the Week.

Since the conclusion of the winter break, Loggins has scored 82 points and grabbed 55 rebounds, producing four double-doubles in four games. Her top performance came on Saturday when she tallied 26 points and 18 rebounds.

Loggins currently ranks fourth in the Liberty League in scoring (17.7 ppg), second in rebounding (11.1 rpg) and sixth in steals (2.3 spg). Although the sample size is small, she leads the conference in scoring (25.5 ppg), rebounding (16.0 rpg) and steals (4.0 spg) in league contests.

The freshman forward is currently on pace to set several new standards among newcomers at Clarkson. Through 10 games, Loggins has 177 points and the freshman record for points in a season is 297, set in the 1991-92 season by Stephanie Sealer. She also has 111 rebounds, which is 78 short of the 189 by Sarah Wesner in the 2003-04 campaign.

@zAgateSubhead:SLU’s McGovern ECAC Rookie of the Week

CANTON - St. Lawrence University freshman forward Sean McGovern has been named ECAC Hockey Rookie of the Week for the week of Jan. 5 in voting by the league’s coaches.

McGovern, a wing from Milton, ON, becomes the first Saint to win the ECAC’s weekly rookie honor this season and the third individual to earn a weekly honor. Kyle Flanagan was a two-time Player of the Week and Matt Weninger a two-time Goaltender of the Week earlier this season.

McGovern had his first multi-point game in a 4-3 loss to RIT on Friday, assisting on all three Saint goals, and earned his fourth point of the weekend when he assisted on the game-winning goal in a 4-3 win over the Tigers on Saturday night, a win which gave the Saints the 1000th victory in their program history. McGovern had five points, all on assists, in 19 games thus far this season.

The Saints return to ECAC action at Appleton Arena Friday and Saturday, hosting Yale and Brown in 7 p.m. starts.
