OGDENSBURG — The city plays host to a lush and healthy urban forest, but steps should be taken to protect against invasive species, said a consultant’s report Thursday.

Representatives of ForeCon of Falconer, a forestry and natural resources company, spent three and a half weeks surveying the 2,510 trees on public rights-of-way. They found that 86 percent of Ogdensburg’s trees are in good condition.

However, with the spread of invasive species targeting specific trees throughout the region, ForeCon recommended the city take steps to protect its urban forest, valued at $9.6 million.

The consultants suggested the city diversify its tree stock — currently, 49 percent of the city’s trees are maples — and the company recommends no more than 30 percent of the city’s trees come from one family.

City Council members also were urged to decide a course of action to remove or treat the city’s 181 ash trees to defend against the spread of the emerald ash borer.

Finally, Ogdensburg was urged to plant more trees for the environmental and economic benefits they create.
