To The Editor:
Well, our winter has just started, and the storm has been over for a week now. Many sidewalks go unshoveled, and many homeowners sidewalks are well maintained. Some homeowners, apartment renters, and owners of vacant properties just wont take the responsibility and shovel their sidewalks. This makes it very hard on kids going to and from school. Mail carriers have a tough walk every day. I believe they should refuse to deliver the mail to these houses.
Another complaint is the private plows that block city streets and corners and put snow into the streets, even blocking fire hydrants. Just this first storm, one was cut off at its bottom by a snow-removing contractor at the chicken restaurant on State Street. The person who plows the restaurant plowed all the snow onto the corner and buried the fire hydrant. These are just some of the things these plow jockeys do. It is just plain brainless on their part. But, of course, everyone says they didnt do it.
This is a job that the city Department of Public Works will have to repair under winter conditions. Give me a break. The public should be able to solve this, or either the property owner should have to pay for it. Everyone should be punished.
All private contractors removing snow in the city should be registered with the city. I believe a good many of these snow jockeys dont have insurance to plow snow for pay on their plows.
It is time for the current city leadership to take the responsibility and implement a new snow code or enforce the one on the books now. This has been ignored by city residents and leaders for far too long. I hope the city Department of Public Works doesnt let this repair job come out of their budget. Put them in jail, no matter who, until it is paid.
