MASSENA - In 2012, about 1.6 million new cancer cases were diagnosed and over 500,000 Americans died from cancer.
More than one million people in the United States get cancer each year and student-athletes at Massena Central are stepping up and taking an active role in the fight against this disease. Several of the winter sports teams have planned upcoming events to help raise funds to fight cancer.
The Girls and Boys JV and Varsity Basketball teams, the Girls Varsity Hockey team, and the Wrestling team have teamed up to help raise funds. They will be selling sponsor pin-up cards at school and in the community, as well as donating proceeds from their games. Special events will be held during their fundraising games. The teams will also be competing amongst themselves to see who can raise the most funds.
The Girls Varsity Hockey team will kick off the fight with their Pink in the Rink game on Wednesday, January 23rd. They will be playing their last league game against Salmon River starting at 5:15 p.m. All fans are asked to wear pink that night to show their support for the fight against cancer. Any child dressed in pink attending the game with an adult will be admitted free of charge. There will also be a pink 50/50 raffle and a pink Chuck-A-Puck contest with all proceeds being donated.
The following are the dates the teams will be hosting their Massena Athletes Fight Cancer games - girls hockey vs. Salmon River, Wednesday, Jan. 23, 5:15 p.m.; wrestling vs. Clifton-Fine, Wednesday, Jan. 30, 6 p.m.; boys basketball vs. OFA, Friday, Feb. 1, 7 p.m.; girls basketball vs. Franklin Academy, Monday, Feb. 4, 7 p.m.
