Massena girls turn back Potsdam for Central hoops win


MASSENA - The Massena Central varsity girls basketball team turned back Potsdam Central 60-50 in an NAC Central Division matchup on Thursday.

Alisha Jacobs led the Massena offense with a 24-point night that included five three-pointers. She also notched seven steals, four rebounds and two assists. Marissa Manley went a perfect 6-6 from the foul line in contributing 18 points while pulling down 12 rebounds for her 11th double-double in 13 games this winter. Samanntha Villnave worked the paint for eight points and 10 boards. Sidney Thompson tossed through another seven points and Dominique Valanicius closed out the Lady Raider scoresheet with a three-pointer.

For Potsdam, Shanielle Chambers drilled four three-pointers in matching Jacobs for scoring honors with 24 points. Taylor Bonno anchored the inside scoring for the Lady Sandstoners with 16 points while Breanne Sapp added eight and Sarah Vivlamore accounted for the other two.

The teams traded leads in the first quarter before a late putback by Jacobs put the Lady Raiders ahead 17-15. Massena generated the last seven points of the second quarter to take a 34-27 lead into halftime but the Lady Sandstoners opened with a 9-3 run in the third quarter to cut the deficit to 37-36 but the Lady Raiders countered by with a 9-4 surge to close out the frame and led 46-40 to start the fourth quarter where they put together another late run to seal the win.

Massena also won the JV contest. Jaylee Jones (13 points), Jessica Rode (12 points) and Sophia Rusaw (11 points) anchored the winning effort.

Rhiannon McBride netted two points for Potsdam.

Massena (7-6, 4-3) is slated to play at St. Lawrence Central on Tuesday at 7 p.m. while Potsdam (1-7, 2-9) plays host to Hammond starting at 5:30 p.m.

Canton 61, Gouverneur 43: In Canton, the Golden Bears maintained their Central Division lead by hitting 21 of 24 free throws and scoring 22 points in the fourth quarter. Emma Rexford went 9-10 at the line scoring 19 points and Katie Christy went 7-8 in a 15-point effort. The two combined to score 18 points in the fourth quarter while Kaeli Frank finished with another 12 points in the winning effort.

Rachel Knowlton and Kirstin Roberts scored 15 and 12 points leading Gouverneur.


The lone North Division game played on Thursday saw Madrid-Waddington stop Tupper Lake 42-26.

Tess Knights and Jenny King led the visiting Lady Yellowjackets with 12 points apiece. Olivia Parmeter chipped in another eight as M-W sealed the win with a 17-3 fourth-quarter surge.

Katie Stuart had a game-high 14 points in the losing cause followed by Ryanne O’Connor with seven.


In the four NAC West Division games on Thursday; Clifton-Fine outscored Hermon-DeKalb 57-46, Hammond beat Lisbon 61-23, Heuvelton handled Edwards-Knox 44-21 and Harrisville downed Morristown 51-25.


In interdivisional action on Thursday, Brushton-Moira overpowered St. Regis Falls 49-11 while Chateaugay gained a 50-22 non-league decision over Chazy.

B-M 49, SRF 11: Danielle Trimm led all scorers with 15 points as the Lady Panthers (4-6, 4-5) outscored the Lady Saints 33-7 in the second half. Jenna Dufrane netted another nine followed by Arielle Gary and Miada McCarthy with six points apiece.

Kaitlyn White paced SRF (0-10, 0-8) with six points followed by Brittany Rondeau with five.

Chateaugay 50, Chazy 22: In Chazy, Courtney Boyea led the Lady Bulldogs (8-1) with 16 points. Makayla Fleury added eight followed by Alexis Beach with seven.
