Town of Alexandria plans to complete Route 12 water project in spring

ALEXANDRIA BAY — Alexandria’s $2.8 million project will bring potable water to Route 12 businesses and homes, allowing for a much-needed economic boost along the corridor, according to local officials.

Town Supervisor Dale D. Hunneyman said the big-picture plan is to get the main line installed by April 1 and start connecting properties, such as the Price Chopper store under construction near Interstate 81, as soon as possible.

The water project has been in the works for several years but until last month, Alexandria had been unable to secure grant funding for the work.

New York’s Empire State Development Corp. awarded the town a $500,000 grant for the approximately three-mile water line extension.

The town will borrow money to cover the rest of the multimillion-dollar construction project, which soon will go out to bid, Mr. Hunneyman said.

Representatives including state Sen. Patricia A. Ritchie, R-Heuvelton, and Assemblywoman Addie J. Russell, D-Theresa, also are helping Alexandria secure low- or no-interest state loans.

The Route 12 Water District will service about 110 equivalent dwelling units along the corridor by piping water from Alexandria Bay.

Town officials have been working even harder to get money for the Route 12 water project because of the Price Chopper plaza development.

Price Chopper plans to open its doors to customers in the spring and is expected to give the local economy a boost, not only by attracting more tourists to the St. Lawrence River community but by hiring more than 100 employees.

Mr. Hunneyman said more commercial development is planned for that plaza, but little is known about the businesses that may move in.
