HEUVELTON - With an Ogdensburg animal clinic no longer boarding stray dogs, the town of Oswegatchie has made arrangements with another kennel.

The town board Monday voted 5-0 in favor of a one-year contract with Maple Ridge Kennels, Route 68, Canton. Under the agreement, the kennel will house and feed the stray dogs at a cost of $15 per dog daily.

Bridge Port Veterinary Clinic, 5962 Route 812, stopped accepting stray dogs from the town and several other St. Lawrence County municipalities as of Dec. 31, according to James E. Pipher Sr., the town’s dog warden. Mr. Pipher said last week it was “winding down” the activity.

Maple Ridge will also make arrangements for the euthanasia and burial of dogs when necessary at a cost of $50 per animal.

Voting in favor of the contract were Town Supervisor Alfred (Bud) Nichols and board members Bruce O. LaRose, Kenneth A. Wilson, Michael Stoner and Lillian O. LaRose.

The board also voted 5-0 Monday in favor of appointing Linda J. Wood as the town historian. She replaces Linda Marshall, who retired Dec. 31.

Her salary will be $550 a year.

Mrs. Wood worked at Pickens General Store, Heuvelton, and the former Hacketts Hardware store, Ogdensburg. She told the board that an appreciation for the town’s past prompted her to apply for the position.

“I just like the local history,” she said.

Mrs. Marshall has agreed to familiarize Mrs. Wood with the town historian’s position.
