James L. Hourigan

James L Hourigan, (U.S. Navy Retired) passed away at Fort Miley VA Hospital in San Francisco on December 2, 2012 at the age of 100. James was born on February 18, 1912 near Rochester, NY - the son of Merville E. Hourigan and Marie (Shaw) Hourigan. Jim and his family moved to Watertown, NY when he was a young boy and he attended Sacred Heart and Immaculate Heart Academy.

He served in the Naval Reserves and then 20 years in the US Navy, first as a Pattern Maker and then as Chief Photographers Mate. James was a Pearl Harbor survivor and often joked that he survived Pearl Harbor twice, once during the Japanese attack and the second time when he was attending the 50th anniversary of the original attack when he suffered a heart attack.

After his Navy retirement, Jim and his wife settled in Alameda, CA and he worked at the Alameda Naval Air Station retiring after 20 years. Until recent years, Jim was a very active member of the Alameda B.O.P. Elks lodge 1015. Jim was also a very active member of the Pearl Harbor Survivors’ Association and the Air Museum in Oakland, California. He was also a member of the V.F.W.

James was predeceased by his wife Mary (1980) and all his siblings - Margaret Heinrich, Merville Hourigan, John Hourigan, Alice Ward, Marcella Besha, Dorothy Burnsed, Madeline Poli and Kathryn Howe. He is survived by many nieces and nephews throughout the U.S. and locally Including Edward Heinrich, Jr. – Marcellus, NY; Mary Dufresne – Adams Center, NY and Jeanne Burnash Spry– Watertown, NY.

A private family service will be held during the spring with interment at the Glenwood Cemetery, Watertown, NY.
