MASSENA — After 20 years in business here, the Yankee One Dollar store will be closing its doors.

“It’s not that we want to, but things have been pretty bad the past few years,” company President Keith R. Flike said.

Mr. Flike cited Walmart’s move into the village as the beginning of the end for his store.

“That kind of became the center of the retail universe,” he said.

He also noted there’s a lot more competition in Massena than there used to be.

“When we opened,” there weren’t so many national retailers, he said. “We’re just a regional player.”

He said the store employs “seven to eight” workers. The closure will leave the chain with 27 stores across upstate New York and Vermont.
