COLTON - Planned events for the town of Colton Winterfest include inside and outdoor activities from 10 a.m. to dusk on Saturday and Sunday at Catamount Lodge & Forest.

Catamount Lodge, owned by Ruth and Joe McWilliams, is located about eight miles south of the hamlet of South Colton on state Highway 56 inside the Adirondack Park. The property hugs Carry Falls Reservoir. Visitors should look for the Catamount Lodge sign on the left when driving south on State Highway 56 toward Route 3.

Inside visitors can tour the Lodge and view quilts throughout, some of which are only on display during Winterfest Weekend and some of which are permanently available for guests to enjoy.

The featured Quilt Show artisan this year is Jill Josephs of Potsdam, who plans to have more than 50 of her creations at Catamount Lodge. Ms. Josephs will be on site both days from 1-4 p.m. for visitors to meet and discuss quilting.

She made her first quilt in 1987 and is now well-known among the vibrant network of quilters in the north country. She has taught many others including adults, 4-Hers and her own children while home schooling them.

Ms. Josephs also understands the therapeutic value of quilts to those who make them as well as those who receive them. And she finishes creations pieced by others using her long arm quilting machine for a variety of community service projects as well as for pay. When working for pay she does business as ‘In the Sewing Room’ out of her home sewing room, which is the size of a two-car garage.

In addition, visitors to Catamount Lodge can see a number of wall quilts created by Patty Blickwedehl of South Colton, which are permanently on display.

Her creations represent a range of techniques, some of which are pieced and quilted entirely by hand while others are crafted with the aid of sewing machines. During the weekend many other quilts can be viewed at three other Quilt Show locations—Colton Hepburn Library, Colton Town Hall, and Zion Episcopal Church (all on Main Street in the hamlet of Colton).

Outdoor activities at Catamount include recreational snowshoeing as well as cross-country skiing. Trails on the property are open year-round to the public during daylight hours. In the winter marked and groomed trails on the Catamount property provide a great opportunity for all ages to enjoy the outdoors and explore the forest while trekking the flat terrain as well as gently rolling to moderate hills. Once again the Physical Education department at Colton-Pierrepont Central School is making snowshoes available so anyone can participate. Visitors should stop by the Lodge to sign out a pair, returning them when done.

Two school groups, the Student Government and the Foreign Language Club, also will be serving hot drinks and snacks in the Lodge on Saturday and Sunday respectively. Donations are requested to support organization activities, including the Foreign Language Club’s next trip to Europe in 2015.

While in South Colton on Sunday, winter enthusiasts who want to go dog sledding should call Spencer Thew of Call of the Wild 262-2145 to reserve a time and learn about the cost to do so.

And at the end of each day visitors can eat locally. A spaghetti dinner sponsored by the Colton-Pierrepont Senior Racqueteers is being held at the school from 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday.

Another sit-down dining options both days include Mike’s South of the Rock Inn on State Highway 56 in the hamlet of South Colton and the Hide Away Café on Gulf Road just outside the hamlet of Colton.

The complete Winterfest schedule is on the town of Colton website, http://townofcolton.com, at the bottom of the Events Schedule under Events/News. Mr. and Mrs. McWilliams may also be called about activities at Catamount Lodge, 262-2450.
