The utterly senseless position shouted by the likes of Wayne LaPierre and his gun-making backers in the National Rifle Association is so absurd and brainless that I am reminded of a cartoon character popular at least 50 or 60 years ago named Pogo.
Pogo was a resident of the Okefenokee Swamp in the Florida-Georgia area. In one memorable cartoon, Pogo was having trouble with someone and came to the conclusion that we have met the enemy and he is us. How profound!
One can only hope that the senseless arguments put forth by the gun-loving associates of the top leadership of the NRA will prompt them to realize that the government is not their enemy. Their actual enemy is themselves.
Three cheers to our president for taking a firm stand on assault weapons, excessive size magazine clips, etc.
The public must back this stand in order to protect the populace. No one is attempting to take away the rights included in the Second Amendment. That only can be done by a constitutional amendment. Assault weapons are not hunting gear. Guns dont kill, but guns in the hands of those who should not have them do.
One can only hope that the public will back this long-needed effort to better manage the sale of legal weapons and stop the sale of weapons intended for military use only.
This country can no longer tolerate the misguided thinking of those whose main interest is their own monetary gain.
