MADRID - Attacking and defending the interior with equal prowess, the Madrid-Waddington boys basketball team claimed its second straight NAC interdivision contest with a commanding 64-45 win over Gouverneur.
We played very well inside and defended well. Greg Thompson had a game for us and TJ Gagnon did a nice job on the boards, said M-W coach Aaron Jones after his team improved to 8-5 before Fridays meeting with Brushton-Moira at home.
The Jackets used a 19-5 second quarter run to take a 30-11 lead at halftime.
Thompson paced the Jackets scoring 22 points, grabbing 11 rebounds and collecting three assists. Terry Crump added 13 points while Dillon Putney scored 10 points and Richard Wright added nine. TJ Gagnon had seven boards and scored five points and

Colton-Pierrepont 51, Salmon River 39: The Colts used a 18-4 third to take a 43-19 lead as Ethan Knight scored 16 points and Gyle Dominy added 13. Josh Hynes scored 12 points for Salmon River. Sky Sunday tallied 10 while Russ Oakes added eight. HOCKEY
Potsdam 5, Salmon River 1: Three goals in a five minute span of the second period lifted the Sandstoners to 5-0 in NAC and 9-4 overall.
Trevor Keleher opened the scoring 5:12 into the middle frame off an assist from Chad Varney. Logan Ford struck at the 8:00 mark by finishing off a play set up by Varney and Robbie Scott. Scott made it 3-0 just 2:17 later. Freshman Max Warden netted the fourth Potsdam goal on the power play assisted by Mason Bartell and Scott with 51 seconds left. Warden then set up Josh Locey for the final Sandstoners goal just 14 seconds later.
The Shamrocks spoiled Devin Crarys (19 saves) bid for the shutout when Thomas Roundpoint connected from Ronnie Boots and Tyler Sisto with 1:21 left in regulation.
Cory Garrow handled 22 shots tending the Salmon River goal.
Canton 4, Thousand Islands 0: Matt Mende scored the first and fourth goals of the game from Andrew McCormick and passed out an assist to EJ Curtis for the Bears who received 18 saves from Jon Stone. McCormick, who logged two assists in the game, also scored a second period goal. Cody Moore also scored while Jay Proulx chipped in two helpers.
The Gouverneur won the pin count 5-4 and earned three forfeit wins in a 52-30 win over Canton. Joey Bush pinned Steve Woods at 113, Aaron Bush pinned Justin Foster at 132, Zach Ayen pinned Devon Agen at 138, Robbie Bell pinned Alex Dean at 145, and Mike Mandigo pinned Zach Rottier at 285 in 1:56 for the Wildcats falls. Ryan Brown stopped Derek Stowell at 106. Jacob Moose pinned Arden Bell at 170, Alex Clement pinned Countryman at 182, and Tom Lumbard pinned Justin Garrison at 195 for the Bears. Earning a key decision for Gouverneur was Curtis Fuller at 170 over Jared Caskanette 13-4.
