Tribute concert for composer in Potsdam

Pianist Julie Miller will present a tribute concert for composer Keith Gates at SUNY Potsdam’s Crane School of Music at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Sara M. Snell Music Theater.

She will be joined by Robert Young, saxophone; John Ellis, trumpet; Lonel Woods, tenor, and Kenneth Andrews, flute, for the special faculty recital.

The concert is a tribute to the Juilliard-trained composer, who lived from 1948 to 2007, and will feature his compositions. Mr. Gates composed in many genres, including symphonies, concerti and operas. His 100-plus works are for band, wind ensemble, orchestra and choir, as well as for various chamber ensembles and soloists.

The free event is open to the public.

Ms. Miller has been an adjunct instructor at Crane for 10 years and is the editor of Gates’s works. Previously she was an associate professor at McNeese State University, Lake Charles, La., where she received the Outstanding Faculty Award from Sigma Alpha Iota- Beta Chi. She also taught piano and courses in music theory at Henderson State University, Arkadelphia, Ark., and piano at Ouachita Baptist University, Arkadelphia. She holds a master of music degree from the University of Illinois.
