HANOVER, N.H. — This time, there was no letdown by the St. Lawrence University men’s hockey team.

The Saints scored three unanswered goals — with a tally each from Kyle Flanagan, Greg Carey and Jeremy Wick in the third period — to rally past Dartmouth 4-2 on Friday night in an ECAC Hockey clash.

Wick scored a pair of goals and recorded an assist, and goalie Matt Weninger made 31 saves for St. Lawrence (10-10-3, 3-5-3), which has won three of its past four games, and is unbeaten in its past three conference games at 2-0-1.

“I think we were a little bit frustrated because we were playing pretty well, but we were down,” St. Lawrence coach Greg Carvel said. “It kind of seemed like the same old pattern for us. But I really challenged the team to dig down and play their best period of hockey of the year, and they did that. Give them credit, they really picked up the tempo, played hard and got the job done.”

The Saints earned the victory against the 12th-ranked Big Green (10-7-2, 6-5-1) after squandering a three-goal lead in a 3-3 tie at Clarkson last Saturday.

This time trailing 2-1 against Dartmouth, St. Lawrence finished the job with its three-goal surge within the first 13 minutes of the third period to take command.

Flanagan drew the Saints even as he one-timed a feed from George Hughes past goalie Charles Grant (22 saves) five minutes, 46 seconds into the third.

Less than two minutes later, Carey scored the go-ahead goal and eventual game winner by knocking in a rebound of a Wick shot at 7:36.

Wick completed the scoring at 12:50 by beating Grant with a wrist shot to finish off a 2-on-1 breakaway with Carey at 12:50.

“We didn’t play very well with the lead against Clarkson,” Carvel said. “After that we talked about playing with good positioning and making good decisions. Tonight, we just kept up the offensive and played the right way with the lead.”

Weninger stopped all 11 shots he faced in the third period, including a save on a point-blank shot during a Dartmouth power play early on, to secure the win for the Saints.

“Matt really had to work hard on a lot of his saves and he did,” Carvel said of Weninger. “He looked good and we really need him to make saves like that for us — he did a great job.”

After Dartmouth led 1-0 on Andy Simpson’s unassisted goal with 1.4 seconds remaining in the first period, Wick drew St. Lawrence even with a power-play goal — his second in as many games — 3:48 into the second period.

The Big Green seized the lead again at 2-1 with another goal in the final minute of a period on Dustin Walsh’s tally at 19:10 of the second.
