This Jan. 4, 1963, shot shows a lighthearted sign put up at the Washington Gulfland station at 247-251 Washington St., at the corner of Sterling street where the Watertown Municipal Building now stands. It reads: Keye’s Gulf — Over the Snow Bank, Watertown’s Most Progressive Service Station. The sign refers to the snow bank in the foreground, which remained high two weeks after a big storm. We could find no explanation for the use of Keye’s in the sign. The dome of Flower Memorial Library is visible at left. Note that the price of gas was 28.9 cents a gallon. The station was owned by James F. O’Hara, who did auto repair, and George L. Ross, who operated the gas station. In addition to repairs and gas, the station was an Avis car rental outlet and also gave Green Stamps.
