Madison parent group raises funds for new Smart Boards

MASSENA - Four classrooms at Madison Elementary School have been equipped with new Smart Boards thanks to fundraising efforts by the school’s parent group.

Madison WHO Club President Kathy Perrine said Principal Alan C. Oliver had approached the group with a proposal to provide more technology for some of the classrooms, and the parent group was able to accommodate his request.

“He’s at our meetings all the time. He did a proposal for four Smart Boards. Four teachers got Smart Boards,” she said.

Mr. Oliver said the Smart Boards went to four classrooms that could accommodate them.

“Four classrooms were completed with all technology needed to use them. Some of them had bits and pieces (of technology),” he said.

The Smart Board is an interactive whiteboard that uses touch detection for user input, such as scrolling and right mouse-click. It operates as part of a system that includes the interactive whiteboard, a computer, a projector and whiteboarding software.

The components are connected wirelessly or via USB or serial cables. A projector connected to the computer displays the desktop image on the interactive whiteboard. The whiteboard accepts touch input from a finger, pen or other solid object.

“Smart Boards are a great piece of instructional technology for classroom teachers. It’s a great tool in the right hands,” Mr. Oliver said.

Ms. Perrine said they were able to raise the money through Yankee Candle fundraisers, which she said are always successful.

“We do one big (fall) fundraiser, Yankee Candle. That’s what we’re going to stick with. We’re also doing a spring fundraiser,” she said.

“The donation came from the community support of the fundraiser,” Mr. Oliver noted.

The Madison WHO Club had presented the district with an $8,000 donation in September, the proceeds from a Yankee Candle fundraiser. Those funds were designated to purchase instructional technology at the school such as Smart Boards, LCD projectors, Smart board moveable racks, and to cover the necessary writing and installation costs.

“The board (of education) was gracious enough to accept the donation,” Mr. Oliver said.

“Thank you to the parent group and the community. We have an incredibly supportive parent community at Madison Elementary School. They always come through,” he said.

Ms. Perrine said they’re planning to hold another Yankee Candle fundraiser in the spring.

“We’ll deliver them a week before Mother’s Day. Hopefully we’ll be able to purchase more Smart Boards,” she said.
