The HAL 9000 was a super intelligent computer in the movie 2001: A Space Odyssey. In that movie, the computer killed the entire crew of a Jupiter-bound spaceship when the crew threatened (secretly) to disconnect the malfunctioning computer.
Like the HAL 9000, Adam Lanza, the Sandy Hook shooter, seemed to be able to keep it together until he got wind that his own mother was considering placing him in residential care (committed), because his mental disability was getting too much for her to handle.
Did Adam Lanza go HAL 9000 on the world? I think so. The issue is not guns, or even Lanzas mental disability; the issue is a gun-owner mother who failed to see the danger, and who broke one of the most basic and cardinal rules of gun ownership: always secure your weapons!
The HAL 9000 and Adam Lanza had some things in common; both did not have the social skills needed to enable them to distinguish between the nuances of human behavior. They could only interpret the input from their environments as the literal and certain truth. The HAL 9000 and the Aspergers Syndrome Lanza were incapable of real social judgment and reasoned social mitigation. All of the recently passed gun laws in New York since the Sandy Hook shooting would not have made a bit of difference if they were in force at the time of the shooting. This whole tragedy would have been avoided if Ms. Lanza only had a locked gun cabinet.
The liberals who passed these new laws know all of this, but their objective was never to protect children, but rather to disarm the people of New York. Our state legislators, like the HAL 9000, are most enthusiastic about the mission, Dave! Maybe its time for the north country citizenry to say to the liberal state machine . open the Pod Bay Door, HAL!
