Ogdensburg Free Academy held its first Senior Night ceremony of the winter sports season, on Friday. honored two outstanding scholar-athletes from the Class 2013 in Andrew Cole and Nate Sarkin who have combined for five Section 10 Championships.

Both seniors recorded pins as the Devils climbed to 5-3 in NAC action with a 63-24 win over Canton (4-6). The only other NAC action of the night saw Gouverneur clinch the conference title and record its program’s 43rd straight win with a 50-24 victory.

Cole, the son of Andrew and Leeann Cole, is part of a family wrestling tradition which dates back to the founding of the OFA program. He was also honored by OFA Coach Bill Mitchell for joining the Section 10 100-Win Club and will enter Tuesday’s NAC season final at Clifton-Fine with a 104-59 career record.

The three-year sectional champion and three-year team captain plans to wrestle at the collegiate level next season but is undecided at the present time on his choice of schools. He upped his season record to 31-3 with a first period pin at 170 pounds over Nate Moose on Friday night.

Sarkin, the son of Mike Sarkin and Susan and Andy Smith, upped his season record to 18-8 and career mark to 40-33 with a 34-second pin over Zachery Rottier in the 285-pound bout.

Sarkin, who plans to attend Rochester Institute of Technology in the fall, is a two-year team captain who will be looking to earn his third trip to the state tournament next Saturday (Feb. 9) when the Section 10 Championships will be staged at Canton Central.

“We are really going to miss Andrew and Nate and I want to thank their parents for allowing me to coach these two fine young men,” said Coach Mitchell before the match where the Devils’ fueled a pull-away win with quick falls and three come-from-behind wins.

Joining Andrew Cole and Sarkin with first period pins were: Josh Wangler at 132 pounds, Bailey Phelps at 145 pounds, Nate Murdock at 152 pounds and Alex Cole at 182 pounds.

A duel of 99-pound titans saw Tanner LaPiene erase an early lead and reverse his only NAC loss of the season with an 8-2 decision over Ryan Brown.

Brody Sheppard made the most dramatic turnabout as he bridged his way out a determined first period pin attempt by Jon Feticie and went on to record a fall with one second left in the 106-pound matchup.

Cody Allen-David trailed by one point entering the third period but secured a fall over Jared Cascanette with 1:23 remaining. Codey Bond produced Canton’s only victory on the mat by posting a second period fall in answer to a strong challenge by Glenn Breen at 138 pounds.

Receiving forfeits were: OFA’s Adam Rickett at 126 pounds and the Canton trio of Thomas Lumbard (220), Steve Woods (113) and Codey Brown (195).

Allen Smithers (160) of OFA posted Carl Hayes in the lone exhibition match of the night.

Canton’s senior trio of Corey Brown, AlexDean and Mike Meresca were also recognized before the match.

In modified action Canton’s Coleman Whiteman recorded two pins and teammate Carson Thorton posted a pin and then tied OFA’s Zach LaFave. Cordell David logged OFA’s lone pin in a 9-4 decision.
