PCS jazz bands hosting Tuesday night concert

POTSDAM - Potsdam Central School will feature its two Jazz Bands in concert ay 7 p.m. Tuesday in the high school auditorium.

The AAK Stage Band, directed by Jill Rubio, will get the concert started with an arrangement of the “James Bond” theme. Bill Wither’s classic “Lean on Me,” arranged by John Berry, is next, and will feature Mark Melman on guitar. Tolu Ojo takes the sax solo in “My Heart Will Go On,” arranged by Sweeney, and “Rock Around the Clock,” also arranged by Sweeney, will finish the AAK portion. The students will then return to the stage at the end to combine with the high school musicians for a special number.

After a quick set change, the high school Jazz Band, directed by Theresa Witmer, will open with a different arrangement of “Rock Around the Clock,” this one by Dave Wolpe, and featuring Taylor Prosper on alto saxophone, Noah Chichester on trombone, and Michael Jadlos on drums. Howard Rowe’s “Fast Forward” features trombonists Chichester and Nathan Moose, as well as senior pianist Felix Grimberg. Slowing things down will be “A Matter of Time,” a beautiful piece by Crane School of Music’s jazz director Brett Zvacek. Next is the latin-flavored “Little Sunflower,” written by Freddie Hubbard and arranged by Paul Murtha, and finishing the high school set, the old classic Johnny Warrington arrangement of W.C. Handy’s “St. Louis Blues,” with senior William Baker-Hastings featured on trumpet.

Finally, the two bands will combine to play “Friend Like Me” from Aladdin and an arrangement of Y.M.C.A., made famous by The Village People.

Admission to the concert is free, and the public is invited to enjoy the sounds of Potsdam’s students.
