SOMMERVILLE – Valda Hance, 92, passed away Monday, February 4, 2013 at her home under the care of her family and Hospice of St. Lawrence County.

Calling hours will be Friday, February 8th from 10:00 to 11:00 am with a funeral service at 11:00 am at the Green Funeral Home, Gouverneur with Fr. Stephen Rocker officiating and spring burial in New St. James Cemetery, Gouverneur.

Valda was born October 4, 1920, in Gouverneur, the daughter of Eugene P. and Kathleen Beers Gray.

Valda attended Gouverneur schools, and on April 1, 1940, she married D. Robert Hance at St. James Church, Gouverneur with Rev. CJ Crawley officiating. The couple operated a dairy farm in Somerville for nearly 50 years, and Valda also drove feeder bus for Gouverneur Central School for many years. The Hances moved to Gouverneur in June 1989. Bob passed away November 11, 1989.

Valda was civically active as she belonged to EJ Noble Hospital Ladies Auxiliary, Gouverneur Historical Association, Gouverneur Library, Gouverneur Senior Citizens, Somerville Community Center, and Pine Hill Birthday Club. She also served as an election inspector for 26 years and was a member of St. James Catholic Church.

She enjoyed spending summers at Pleasant Lake where she liked to fish. Valda also enjoyed bowling, gardening, canning, berrying, and doing crossword puzzles.

Valda is survived by a daughter Patricia and John Shippee of Somerville, three sons Robert and Candace Hance of Fort Myers, FL, Larry and Linda Hance of Trout Lake, Ricky and Cynthia Hance of Pleasant Lake, 15 grandchildren, 36 great grandchildren, 15 great, great grandchildren, a sister Doris Tuttle of Fine, nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by her husband, her parents, a son Lee Hance who died at birth, and a sister Shirley Besaw.

Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of St. Lawrence Valley, 6805 US Hwy 11, Potsdam, NY 13676.
