HARRISVILLE- Alfred W. Wood, 93, SR 3, died Saturday morning at Lewis County General Hospital where he had been a patient 3 days.
He was born August 14, 1919 in the Town of Champion to LeRoy and M. Geneva Adner Wood. He graduated from West Carthage High School. He enlisted in the US Army in 1938 and served until 1945. He served in the Asiatic- Pacific Campaign and the Aleutian Islands Campaign, where he was injured on Attu Island during the recapture of the island by the Japanese. After the war, he attended Roosevelt Aviation College, Roosevelt NY.
He married Sarah Daniels March 28, 1945 in Niantic, Connecticut. She died April 22, 2000. Alfred and his wife owned and operated Niantic Aluminum Products in Niantic for over 50 years. He was a member of American Legion Post 789 in Carthage.
He is survived by a daughter Jane Ferencz, Harrisville, with whom he resided, a son Alfred Jr, Jaffery, New Hampshire, two brothers and a sister, Paul, Ballston Lake, NY, Melvin, Pheonix AZ and Ruth Jemzura, Sherburne, NY. He also has a grandson, Robert Ferencz, England, three Great grandchildren Bryce Ferencz, England, Richard III, and Brennan, Harrisville, nieces, nephews and cousins.
He is predeceased by two grandchildren, Jack Wood and Richard Ferencz II, and a brother Dennis.
Calling hours will be held Thursday, February 7th, from 4-6 PM at the Adirondack Funeral Home,14248 State St. Harrisville. A graveside service with military honors will be held in the Spring at Hillside Cemetery, Champion, after which, there will be a gathering of friends and relatives at a place to be determined.
