LOWVILLE The search for a new recreational trails coordinator in Lewis County has begun. The Board of Legislators Economic Development Committee met Thursday to discuss the job description and salary range in the wake of the removal of Robert C. Diehl from the post.
Last week, Lewis County legislators fired Mr. Diehl on their determination of misconduct. He is accused of submitting to the county a purchase order and voucher for $3,262.97 worth of gravel that was delivered to his Martinsburg residence for his personal use.
The duties for the position will remain as they were described upon the posts inception in March 2006, with one addition: Upon the suggestion of Legislator Philip C. Hathway, R-Harrisville, the committee added: Be responsible and accountable for the accuracy of any funds within the department.
Minimum qualifications are an associate degree in environmental conservation, natural resources recreational management, planning, landscape architecture, agriculture or a related field, and four years of experience in recreational trail management, natural resources management, conservation projects, land use planning or related areas.
Candidates with a bachelors degree would need two years experience, while those with a masters degree would need one year of related experience.
The salary range of $35,000 to $50,000 remains the same, commensurate with experience. Mr. Diehl was paid $48,657.00.
Legislators initially discussed lowering the salary, but were concerned about attracting qualified applicants.
Theres more than just digging a hole, putting gravel in it and calling it a trail, said Committee Chairman Richard C. Lucas, R-Barnes Corners.
The position requires more than labor, hence the requirement of related study and experience, county attorney Richard J. Graham said.
The mindset is to plan and manage the whole system, Mr. Graham said.
The selected candidate is required to live in Lewis County or an adjoining county.
