POTSDAM - Darren Mesibov, Potsdam, was recently awarded the seventh annual Louise Harper Memorial Scholarship.

Family and friends of Louise Harper, RN, established a memorial fund to provide an annual scholarship to a non-traditional student.

In 1992, 22years after graduating from Parishville-Hopkinton Central School, Mrs. Harper received an associate’s degree from SUNY Canton and became a registered nurse. She went to work at E.J. Noble Hospital in Gouverneur, working both in the hospital and at Kinney Nursing Home. Mrs. Harper became charge nurse at Kinney Nursing Home, having worked there 13 years at the time of her death in July 2005. Mrs. Harper is survived by her husband, Dean S. Harper, Richville, and their four children, Dean Jr., Mark, and David Harper, and Patricia Rumble, and their families.

Mr. Harper Sr. presented the $500 college scholarship to Darren Mesibov. Darren is currently pursuing an associate’s degree in nursing at SUNY Canton. He and his wife, Molly, reside in Potsdam with their 10-month old twin daughters, Avery and Emelia.

Darren’s desire to become a nurse came after his long recovery from a serious plane crash. He was so impressed by the top quality care he received, he decided he wanted to pursue a career where he could make a difference. His long-term goals are to become educated as an Advance Practice Nurse.

Darren is a certified master dog trainer, licensed commercial pilot and certified flight instructor. He also serves as treasurer of the Nursing Student Association at SUNY Canton and is a member of Phi Theta Kappa honor society. Darren has also served as a member of the Potsdam Rotary Club and Potsdam Airport Committee. He works part-time at Canton-Potsdam Hospital and part-time as a flight instructor. Darren enjoys skiing, bicycling, hiking, canoeing and raising his twin daughters.
