Massena boys run past Salmon River in NAC basketball finale


MASSENA - The Massena Central varsity boys basketball team closed out the NAC regualr season by pulling away to a 67-37 Central Division win at home over Salmon River on Monday.

Zack Rusaw worked the paint for a game-high 22 points and Joey LaBelle fired through another 10 to anchor the winning offense as the Raiders surged their way to a 24-6 lead by the end of the first quarter then stretched their lead to 43-9 at halftime. Zach Fregoe chipped in eight points. Rhoades Tarbell and Robert Cameron contributed four points apiece followed by David Phillips with four and Zevon Viskovich with two.

Josh Hynes paced the Shamrocks with 16 points. Tyler Brooks and Bill Barbour each netted six followed by Jordan Wood with three. Justin Bigness and David both finished with two. Dylan Whitehead and King closed out the Salmon River scoresheet with solo free throws.

The Raiders (10-8, 7-5) will now get set to take on Franklin Academy in the Section 10 Class A championship game on Monday, February 18, at 7:45 p.m. at SUNY Potsdam’s Jerry Welsh Gymnasium. The Shamrocks (3-15, 0-12) are slated to open the Class B playoffs on Thursday with a semi-final round matchup on the road against top-seeded OFA starting at 6 p.m. Potsdam will host Gouverneur in the other Class B semi.

The other NAC boys basketball finale on Monday saw Harrisville outscore West Division rival Hermon-DeKalb 55-37.


The Section 10 girls basketball playoffs open evening with four Class D first round games and a Class C opener. The boys basketball playoffs tip-off on Wednesday.

The Division I boys hockey tournament gets underway on Saturday with semi-final round games pitting top-seed Potsdam at home against Salmon River and Massena playing host to Canton. The Division II playoffs face-off on Friday with a pair of first-round games.
