Area players power Adirondack Region


LAKE PLACID — The Adirondack Region took home women’s hockey gold and St. Lawrence University skier Dylan Murtha captured a gold medal in alpine skiing to highlight area finishers’ performances in the annual Empire State Winter Games that concluded Sunday.

Adirondack defeated the Western Region, 5-2, on Sunday to capture the gold medal. Potsdam’s Christin Sharlow scored a goal in the game as did former Olympian Andrea Kilbourne-Hill, of Saranac Lake. Canton’s Christin Powers supplied two goals in Adirondack’s 11-0 win over Central New York.

In other women’s hockey games, Watertown’s Tanya Crump scored the lone goal in Central New York’s 3-1 loss to Western. Former Clarkson University goalie Lauren Dahm made 39 saves in Central New York’s 1-1 tie against Hudson Valley. She also made 51 saves in a 2-0 loss to New York City.

New York City won the silver medal and Western the bronze.

In skiing, Murtha, a first year student at SLU, finished with a combined two legs time of 1 minute, 15 seconds to win the gold in men’s alpine. Murtha, who is from Truckee, Calif., also won silver in the men’s giant slalom. Murtha finished one-tenth of a second behind Lake Placid’s Kelton Donohue to finish second. St. Lawrence sophomore Loudon Fruth finished third.

In the men’s 20-kilometer classic cross-country skiing race, Colton’s Tom Chappell picked up a gold medal by capturing the Masters 4 category race. He also won gold in the M4 category in the men’s 7.5K freestyle race.

Stewart Wells of Sackets Harbor won bronze in slopestyle event, finishing in third in the Skier Men, age 16-18, group. Slopestyle athletes perform multiple tricks off of jumps to earn points. Wells scored 880 points, finishing behind gold medalist Oliver Holmes of Saranac Lake (1100).

Davis Sprague of Malone captured silver in the Skier Men, age 13-15, group of the BoarderCross/SkierCross event. He totaled 1030 points, placing behind Sebastian Ferretti, of Merrick, who had 1140.

Watertown’s Zachary Sprott-Scribner finished fourth in the Breaker Boys, age 12-13, group in BoarderCross/SkierCross. He recorded 770 points.
