Battle re-enactment taking it to the streets

This year’s Battle of Ogdensburgh re-enactment will be taking it to the streets.

The Feb. 23 version of the re-enactment of the 1813 battle between American and British troops - one day past the actual 200th anniversary - will depart from the climatic showdown at Lighthouse Point - to be held the following day - and showcase what happened on the way there.

What happened was that the soldiers fought at the intersection of Ford and State streets - downtown Ogdensburg today - before moving the fight to Lighthouse Point.

Timothy Cryderman, president of the Forsyth’s Rifles re-enactment group, said the downtown portion of the battle might not be known to some.

“There were two sections of fighting,” he said.

The idea to stage the other section of the battle isn’t an old one.

“It’s been kicked around for a few years,” Mr. Cryderman said, adding that seeing a successful battle re-enactment in the streets in Gananoque, Ont., convinced him that it could work here.

Twelve re-enactment groups from the United States and Canada - 185 soldiers in all - will participate. The downtown battle will last about 45 minutes.

Ogdensburg Police Chief Richard J. Polniak Jr. said that people living near the area of the battle have been advised to expect noise and commotion, but no danger.

“I don’t think it’s going to be a problem,” he said.
