Local college hoops: JCC women have shot at regionals

So, you’re telling me there’s a chance?

For the Jefferson Community College women’s basketball team, there is still a chance to qualify for the Region 3 Tournament for the first time since the 2005-06 season.

And unlike Jim Carrey’s character in the classic comedy, “Dumb and Dumber,” those chances are greater than one in a million.

After closing the regular season with a 51-46 Senior Day victory over Corning CC on Saturday afternoon at JCC, the Cannoneers will need to win this week’s Mid-State Athletic Conference Tournament to qualify for regionals.

“We know that we have to win the next three games in order to make regionals, so we’ll start with practice (today),” JCC sophomore captain Morgan Kiernan said. “We’re not taking any days off. We’re going to go hard and reach that goal.”

JCC improved to 11-15 overall and is the No. 3 seed in the seven-team conference tournament. It will again host Corning CC (4-21), the No. 6 seed, in a first-round game on Tuesday.

The semifinals are scheduled for Friday night at Onondaga CC, and the finals are on Saturday at the same location.

Onondaga CC (24-2) and Finger Lakes CC (15-10) are the top two seeds.

“We got to win now. So, go hard or go home,” JCC freshman point guard Jasmine Canady said.

Canady led the Cannoneers with 14 points, six rebounds and five assists, and provided the big plays late in the game to help the team equal its best win total in seven seasons.

Canady provided the assist to sophomore Dalian Ramos on a fast break to give JCC a 47-46 lead with 2 minutes, 40 seconds left in the game.

She then hit a pair of jump shots, one from just inside the 3-point line, to seal the victory.

“I think she’s developed more, since she’s been here, more of a scorer mentality,” JCC coach Josh Woodward said of Canady. “I think when she got here she wanted to be more of a facilitator.”

Before she drained the two late jumpers, Canady had missed her first eight shot attempts of the second half.

“If I miss a shot I’ll miss a shot, but at the end I still have to shoot,” Canady said. “If it goes in, it goes in. If it doesn’t, it doesn’t. Some games are like that.”

Kiernan scored 12 points and Tapulei Vaveao added 11 for JCC. Kiernan and Vaveao each grabbed eight rebounds.

Jane Judware provided a team-high 10 rebounds and three blocks.

Marissa Pike and Mollie Peck scored 21 and 17 points, respectively, for the Red Barons.

Corning CC suited up just six players, and lost starting guard Taylor Lathrop midway through the second half with an injury.

She fell hard to the floor and landed on her elbow, according to coach Becky Copp. She was unsure about the extent of the injury.

“That set us back a little bit,” Copp said.

“It’s a tough loss for us, obviously. We came ready to play and we played well, it’s one of those games where it’s just, whoever is able to pull it out. It was close all game and they were able to pull through,” she added.

Sophomore guard Derrick Williams scored a game-high 34 points to go with seven rebounds, but it wasn’t enough for the Cannoneers, who dropped their regular-season finale to the Red Barons at JCC.

Kenneth Thomas added 18 points for JCC (6-19), which will play at Finger Lakes CC in the first round of the Mid-State Athletic Conference Tournament on Tuesday.

Will Griffin led Corning CC (9-16) with 22 points, eight assists, seven rebounds and four steals.
