CANTON — A three-vehicle accident left one person slightly injured and briefly tied up traffic in the center of the village Wednesday afternoon.

Interim Police Chief Victor N. Rycroft said vehicles driven by Brian Nichols, 45, Baldwinsville, Kristen Maroney, 18, Potsdam, and Charles O. Barnard, 60, of Rockland, Maine, collided on the Main Street bridge over the Grasse River at 12:47 p.m. near the Cascade Restaurant.

Miss Maroney was driving a passenger car and the men were driving tractor-trailers.

All three vehicles were westbound on Main Street, with Mr. Nichols’s rig stopped waiting to turn left onto Route 11 South. Miss Maroney was in the right-hand lane heading toward SUNY Canton. She was passing Mr. Nichols’s stopped truck on the right when Mr. Barnard, who was in the left-hand lane, also attempted to pass the stopped truck vehicle on the right, Mr. Rycroft said.

Mr. Barnard failed to see Miss Maroney’s vehicle, striking the car and causing it to spin 180 degrees. Ms. Maroney’s vehicle came to rest wedged between both rigs, with the right rear corner of Mr. Nichols’s trailer thrust about 12 inches into her right front passenger door

Miss Maroney suffered minor cuts to two fingers on her right hand caused by broken glass. She was treated at the scene by members of Canton Fire & Rescue.

Mr. Barnard was cited with making an unsafe lane change, returnable in Town Court.
