CANTON A Hermon man was arrested on rape charges Tuesday following investigation into a report that he had sex with a teenage girl in the town of DeKalb last summer, state police said.
Michael C. Besaw, 23, was charged with third-degree rape, in which the victim was less than 17 and the alleged perpetrator was older than 21, a felony, and acting in a manner injurious to a child under 17, a misdemeanor. He was arrested at 4:15 p.m. on Tuesday, troopers said.
The victims age was not immediately available, but troopers said the nature of the charges indicated she was 15 or 16, as a younger age would have resulted in a different charge.
The alleged incident was reported to police Jan. 29.
Besaw was committed to the St. Lawrence County jail, Canton, in lieu of $5,000 bail.
In 2007, he was arrested in connection with a burglary at a home on Old Northerner Road in DeKalb Junction. More than $250 in damage was done in the break-in, in which a digital camera, a safe and an unspecified amount of cash were taken.
He pleaded guilty in July 2007 to third-degree burglary in connection with the burglary and was sentenced to probation, while he and another suspect were ordered to pay a total of $7,009.18 restitution.
Information on the terms of his probation sentence was not immediately available Wednesday.
