Section 10 roundup: Yellow Jackets upset Cougars in Class D

CANTON — After reaching the state championship game last year, the Madrid-Waddington boys basketball team is one step closer to making another appearance in the state class D tournament.

The sixth-seeded Yellow Jackets (15-6 overall) upset No. 2 Edwards-Knox 51-49 in a Section 10 Class D semifinal Wednesday night at SUNY Canton, marking Madrid-Waddington’s second straight upset in this year’s tournament. The Yellow Jackets had knocked off No. 3 Chateaugay 68-52 on Saturday.

Madrid-Waddington will face top-seeded St. Regis Falls for the title at 2:45 p.m. Saturday at SUNY Potsdam.

Colin O’Bryan set up the game-winning basket for Madrid-Waddington, dribbling through the defense and finding Greg Thompson for an open layup with 2.1 seconds remaining.

“I just got the ball and went,” O’Bryan said. “I was supposed to drive, but I saw an (Edwards-Knox) defender coming right at me and I saw a slim opening to Greg. Greg just made a big basket, one of many this season.”

O’Bryan led Madrid-Waddington with 14 points. Maurice Rease scored 13 points and Richard Wright added 10.

Tyler Tresidder led the Cougars (17-3) with 21 points and Chris Davison scored 10.

The Saints (18-1) moved one win away from their first section title since 1976 with a win over No. 4 Harrisville in the second semifinal at SUNY Canton.

Caleb Green led the Saints with 21 points, including 13 in the second quarter. St. Regis Falls held the Pirates (16-5) to just two points in the fourth quarter.

“We played huge on defense in the second half after talking about it at halftime,” Green said. “We had a big fourth quarter and shot the ball very well tonight.”

Tyler Daggett scored 12 points for the Saints and Brandon Votra added 11 points and 10 rebounds.

Tim Fowler led Harrisville with 16 points.

Third-seeded Norwood-Norfolk (12-8-2) scored the first two goals of the game and held on to upset the No. 2 Blue Devils in a Section 10 Division II semifinal in Ogdensburg.

Norwood-Norfolk will meet No.1 St. Lawrence Central in Sunday’s 4 p.m. title game at Cheel Arena in Potsdam.

Zeb Brown scored the first goal for the Flyers at 5 minutes, 25 seconds of the first period, and Dan Fyckes made it 2-0 with a goal 28 seconds into the second.

“OFA is an outstanding team and to beat them three times, and to win twice at (OFA) is a great achievement,” Flyers coach Paul Durant said.

Brandon Mullin scored the only goal for OFA (10-7-4) with 5:36 left in the third.

Ian Lynch scored two goals as the Larries (15-5-1) beat No. 4 Malone in a Division II semifinal in Brasher Falls.

Nathan Stickney, Luke Arquiett and Kody Kocsis also scored for St. Lawrence Central.

“We came out and played hard for the first five or six minutes and I thought we had the edge territorially in the first period,” SLC coach Mickey Locke said. “Our kids didn’t get frustrated. They stayed on task and kept their focus and came up with a big win.”

Kyler Head and Tanner Studlack scored for the Huskies (9-11-1).
