ALEXANDRIA BAY — As many as 200 “dippers” are expected to plunge into the freezing-cold St. Lawrence River on Saturday to benefit River Hospital.

Sponsored by Friends of River Hospital and held at the Bonnie Castle Resort, the annual Polar Bear Dip raises money for the hospital through its brave participants who gather donations from family and friends to enter the event.

This year’s Polar Bear Dip also celebrates the 10th anniversary of River Hospital, and event organizers are anticipating some participants will be dressing up in birthday themes for the special occasion.

Jodi M. Kemple, director of programs and events with the River Hospital Foundation, said proceeds from this year’s event will be used to purchase a portable ultrasound machine for River Hospital’s Emergency Department.

Last year, a record-breaking 189 people jumped into the icy river to raise a total of $67,000.

Ms. Kemple said she believes the group will do even better this time as it has been able to raise more money with each succeeding year.

Registration runs from 9 a.m. to noon, and dippers must be at least 18 years old. A $100 minimum pledge is required from each participant.
