Gouverneur, Carthage win state wrestling titles

Gouverneur crowned two state champions and Carthage recorded its first state wrestling championship as north country wrestlers finished with three championships today in Albany.

Gouverneur’s Dillon Stowell began the state championship run at the Times Union Center by capturing the 113-pound class in Division II. Stowell defeated Nick Casella of Locust Valley 6-3 in the final.

Wildcats teammate Hunter Ayen followed with a state title in the 195-pound Division II class. Ayen rallied from a 6-0 deficit to beat Bryce Mazurowski of Avon, 9-6.

Carthage’s Shayne Brady, meanwhile, avenged a loss in the state final last year by winning his 182-pound Division I title match, 5-3 in overtime, over James Corbett of Wantagh. Brady recorded a takedown with 47 seconds left in the extra session.

Three other area wrestlers lost their semifinal matches today. Immaculate Heart Central’s Nick Koelmel suffered his first defeat of the season, falling 3-2 at 145 pounds. Lowville’s Brandon Fayle lasted three overtimes before losing his semifinal match.

Ogdensburg Free Academy eighth-grader Taylor Lapiene lost 3-2 in a 99-pound semifinal.
