TURIN An Oswego County man was killed in a snowmobiling accident Saturday in Lewis County, while a Cayuga County man was injured in a separate accident Sunday in the county.
Sheriffs deputies said Ryan T. Baye, 35, Constantia, died Saturday of injuries he suffered on Trail C4F in the town of West Turin. Deputies said Mr. Baye was operating his 2009 Ski-Doo 600 about 1:20 p.m. when for unknown reasons the vehicles skis turned to the left, according to witnesses. The action caused Mr. Baye, who was standing up at the time, to strike the handlebars with his chest and be ejected from the sled. He was taken by emergency medical personnel to an ambulance, where he was pronounced dead.
In the second accident, Justin Wilbur, 28, Auburn, was operating a 2011 Polaris Pro-R 600 on Trail C4B in the town of Lewis about 1 p.m. Sunday when he attempted to make a right turn. Mr. Wilbur told deputies that the sled would not turn and continued traveling straight, going off the trail and striking a tree.
Mr. Wilbur was ejected from the snowmobile and struck a second tree with the lower half of his body, according to deputies. He complained of hip and upper leg pain and was taken by Constableville Ambulance to Rome Memorial Hospital for treatment of a possible broken pelvis.
Deputies said speed was a contributing factor in that accident.
