SYRACUSE — The Syracuse University football team will begin its first season in the Atlantic Coast Conference with conference home games against Clemson, Wake Forest and two former Big East rivals, Pittsburgh and Boston College.

The ACC released its schedule Monday, the first that includes new members SU and Pittsburgh.

The Orange, under new head coach Scott Shafer, will host Clemson in their ACC opener on Oct. 5. Other ACC Carrier Dome games come against Wake Forest (Nov. 2), Pittsburgh (Nov. 23) and Boston College (Nov. 30).

Syracuse, which finished 7-5 last season with a victory in the Pinstripe Bowl, will play ACC road games against North Carolina State (Oct. 12), George Tech (Nov. 19), Maryland (Nov. 9) and Florida State (Nov. 16).

The Orange has a bye on Oct. 28 before the conference schedule begins.

Five of SU’s ACC opponents — Clemson, N.C. State, George Tech, Florida State and Boston College — received bowl invitations last season. Clemson and defending ACC champion Florida State both went 7-1 in the conference. Clemson, which finished the season ranked 11th in the AP Top 25 poll, defeated Louisiana State in the Chick-fil-A Bowl. Florida State, which finished ranked 10th, beat Northern Illinois in the Orange Bowl.

Syracuse’s nonconference schedule includes home games against Wagner College (Sept. 14) and Tulane (Sept. 21). The Orange plays on the road at Northwestern on Sept. 7, and begins the season against Penn State on Aug. 31 in the New York’s College Classic at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J.

Game times have not been announced.

SU last met Clemson in the Gator Bowl on Jan. 1, 1996, the only previous time it has played the Tigers. The Orange won 41-0 behind quarterback Donovan McNabb, who was in his freshman season.

Syracuse begins spring practice March 19 and will hold its annual spring game April 20 at the Carrier Dome.
