CANTON - The St. Lawrence-Lewis BOCES has announced the Career and Technical Education Programs will offer a Pharmacy Technician program beginning September in all three CTE Centers: Southwest CTE Center, Fowler (Gouverneur); Seaway CTE Center, Norwood; and Northwest CTE Center, Ogdensburg,
Were really excited to be able to offer this opportunity, and we want to run it at all three centers, however the exact locations offering the program will be based on enrollment, Career and Technical Education Director Renee Langtry-Green said. This program will make certain that students could be both college and career ready just out of high school. Students will be able to go out into the workforce or continue on with their education after following this path.
A comprehensive 450-hour one-year program for high school seniors, the Pharmacy Technician program will prepare successful students for the national certification exam through the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board. Pharmacy technicians assist pharmacists in providing effective, appropriate, and safe pharmacy services and work in a variety of settings. They may also assist a licensed pharmacist to provide medication and other health care products to patients.
Career opportunities could include hospital pharmacy, internet pharmacy, retail pharmacy, health facilities, clinics, outpatient centers, mail order pharmacie, and pharmaceutical manufacturer.
Students successfully completing the program could also continue on to receive a bachelors degree, a masters degree in Pharmaceutical Sciences and a Doctorate Degree in Pharmacy.
Gouverneur Central School District Superintendent Lauren French said that shes very happy about this new opportunity for students. Students will really have a choice as to whether they can go straight to work after high school or continue on with their education, she said. Whats really great is that pharmacy technician jobs are readily available in our area, and therefore students have the possibility to stay and work in the north country. Its important that as a community we work to attract bright young people to stay in the area.
