CARTHAGE — With a 36 voters in favor of the purchase, the Carthage-Wilna Fire District have been given the go ahead to purchase a new fire engine/pumper. The department’s board of commissioners has accepted a bid from KME for the purchase at a cost of $459,990.

Financing for the purchase will be obtained through a combination of a bond for up to 10 years for the maximum amount of $475,000 principal /or by utilizing reserve funds of $130,000 and bond anticipation notes for up to five consecutive years.

Six people voted against the purchase during the public referendum Wednesday.

Once the new truck is delivers, the 25 year old fire truck will be retired.

During Thursday’s board meeting, Crowley & Halloran CPAs presented a report on the annual audit to the board.

“You’re doing everything the way you should,” Michael W. Crowley said. “You are putting money aside to purchase new equipment. You are doing the right thing.”

In her report, district treasurer Linda Parshaw said the fire district has $176,000 in that reserve fund.

Pamela J. Halloran said Ms. Prashaw was doing a “phenomenal job.” Ms. Halloran did point out areas for improvement for the fire district’s record keeping, including properly recording fixed assets.

The audit also revealed there was a discrepancy in the payment of raises to district employees. To remedy that, the board voted to have the annual pay increase take affect at 7 a.m. on the first Sunday of January, correlating with the start of the pay period.
