ONNY presenting Peter and the Wolf at Hosmer Hall

POTSDAM - The Orchestra of Northern New York will present the classic 20th Century Russian fairy tale, Peter and the Wolf, for Orchestra and Narrator at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at Hosmer Hall, SUNY Potsdam, . The evening’s performance will also feature pianist, Noah Landers, of Carthage Central School; the winner of the seventh annual James and Katherine Andrews Young Artist Instrumental Competition.

The family concert will begin with Modest Mussorgsky’s exciting Night on Bald Mountain. “A dark and demonic symphonic fantasy inspired by two great works of Russian literature, this music screams and howls, scratches, whirls, and writhes.” (Dr. Jess Tyre; associate professor; Crane School of Music at SUNY Potsdam).

This piece was chosen by Walt Disney for the animated film, Fantasia, in which evil spirits and restless souls dance and fly through the air until driven back to their graves by the sound of an Angelus bell as night fades into dawn.

Following Night on Bald Mountain, The Orchestra will accompany this year’s winner of the James and Katherine Andrews Young Artist Instrumental Competition, Noah Landers. Mr. Landers, a resident of Watertown and a sophomore at Carthage High School, will perform the first movement of Camille Saint- SaŽns most popular Piano Concerto No. 2 in G Minor.

Completing the first half of the evening will be John Williams’ Suite from Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. Written for the third movie in the series, this music will surely bring you back to the magical world of Harry Potter.

Following a brief intermission, The Orchestra will present Sergei Prokofiev’s Peter and the Wolf with narration by North Country Public Radio’s Todd Moe.

Commissioned by the Central Children’s Theater in Moscow in 1936, Prokofiev was to create a work that would develop “musical tastes in children from their first years at school.” Since it’s premiere, Peter and the Wolf has seen many adaptations and revised settings including the 1946 Disney cartoon by the same name. Most recently, in 2008, a British-Polish production won the Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film.

Tickets can be purchased by calling 315-267-2277 or online at Tickets may also be purchased in Potsdam at Northern Music & Video or at the CPS Box Office at SUNY Potsdam. Ticket prices are $22 for adults, $20 for seniors, $10 for students 13+, and free for children 12 and under.
